Clipper or limiter for loudness

Answer in brief

A clipper cuts peaks at once and adds a little distortion. A limiter turns the sound down for a moment and adds movement instead. Clippers suit short peaks like drums and limiters suit anything held, which is why many loud masters use both, clipper first.

Two ways to stop a peak

A limiter watches the level and lowers the gain when a peak would cross the ceiling, then raises it again over its release time. The shape of the wave stays the same and only its level moves, so the sound stays clean but can breathe or pump. A clipper changes the shape of the wave and nothing else. It has no attack or release, because nothing moves over time.

When a clipper does it better

Short, sharp peaks are a clipper’s best case. A kick or snare hit is over so fast that cutting its tip adds harmonics for only a moment, and the ear hears the track as louder rather than distorted. A limiter on the same hit has to dip the whole mix, which can make the drums feel softer than they are.

When a limiter does it better

Vocals, held synths and bass are better left to a limiter, because clipping them adds distortion on every cycle of the wave. A limiter is also the tool for the final ceiling before streaming, since many can read the true peaks between samples. FabFilter lists true peak limiting for Pro-L 2, for example.

Using both together

The common order is clipper first and limiter last. The clipper shaves the tallest peaks and the limiter catches what is left and holds the final ceiling. Some products combine the two. TDR Limiter 6 GE chains a clipper with a compressor and several limiters, and the clip limiter block in Studio 56 is a clipper followed by a limiter that keeps the output under its ceiling.

For evening out level rather than raising it, Best Compressor Plugin is the better guide.
